What is solar PV?

Solar energy is a clean and renewable resource. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems generate electricity silently and without any moveable parts. A solar array is comprised of solar modules, which directly converts sunlight into electricity. The PV system integrates seamlessly with the utility grid by supplying the building and the grid with the same quality power being distributed by the electric utility. When the PV system produces enough power to serve all of the loads in the building at a given time, the excess power will flow through the utility meter and into the utility grid, effectively spinning the meter backward and generating credit. If the power demand of the building loads is greater than the power produced by the PV system, then the output of the PV system will offset the building consumption proportionally. This policy is known as Net Metering.

Net Metering

Net Metering is a consumer-based renewable energy incentive. Net Metering is available to any consumer that interconnects their renewable energy generator to the utility grid. As part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, all public electric utilities are now required to make available upon request net metering to their customers. Colorado is widely considered to have the best net metering policies in the United States as it has no limit on its enrollment.

Rebates & Incentives

Currently, there are many local, state, and utility incentives available that promote renewable energy. Rebates can provide immediate savings on the installation of a solar PV system, often covering over 50% of the total cost of the system. Solar Investment Tax Credit

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 extended many consumer tax incentives originally introduced in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Customers who install solar PV systems are now eligible to receive a 30% tax credit for residential and commercial installations; the previous tax credit cap of $2,000 no longer applies.
